We all know the famous story about Van Gogh cutting off his ear. This is the painting he did right after. The real story is bizarre — he cut off his ear, called a brothel, asked for a woman named Rachel, handed her the ear and said "Guard this object with your life," then disappeared. Police found him sick in bed the next day. This painting was made two weeks later.
