In 2003, I started a short-lived band called Travelers. We wrote a bunch of songs and played a few shows. More recently, I've been writing predominantly instrumental tunes. A few years ago, the comedy/novelty bug bit me and I recorded a tune called “Pineapple Pizza." It got airplay on The Dr. Demento Show and a decent amount of views on YouTube. Lame claim to fame, I know.
Over the past few years, I've been revamping and rearranging several of my old songs. For instance, “Pineapple Pizza" is now called “Pineapple Pizza (Deep Dish)" and has an almost entirely different structure and a rewritten verse. I've also written about half a dozen other songs, enough for an EP. They're mostly all-new, with a few being reworkings of existing songs. There will be at least one instrumental. All of them are serious, if a bit nerdy.
So, it is with great enthusiasm that I'm officially announcing that I'm writing and recording the record. It'll have 6 or 7 songs, feature original artwork for each one (no AI), and be available on Bandcamp, my website, and YouTube. I'm calling it Wheezing from the Depths. The name of the band is Asthmatic Whales. It's heavily inclined by Frank Zappa, Guided by Voices, R. Stevie Moore, Sparks, Oingo Boingo, Tonio K., and Weird Al Yankovic (among others).
Asthmatic Whales is a one-man band with a retro and absurdist aesthetic. Each song will probably have its own artwork and who knows? There might even be a physical release available some time down the line.
It'll be fun. I promise. There’ll be more to come, so keep watching (and listening to) the seas. When the time is right, check out Asthmatic Whales on Bandcamp.
